A Merry Christmas to all Friends of the Last Ocean
2012 has been a huge year – starting with two emergency rescues of stranded fishing boats in the Ross Sea, our campaign gained momentum and built up to the release of The Last Ocean film in New Zealand; we then followed the US/NZ attempts to formulate a joint marine protected area (MPA) proposal and of course the CCAMLR meeting that promised so much, but delivered so little.
Thank you for your support – FOLO and the Last Ocean Facebook community are absolutely integral to our campaign.
2013 - A way forward
The big event of 2012 was the CCAMLR meeting in October where the 25 nations met with the aim of creating a in the Ross Sea. The fact that in the lead up NZ & US couldn’t agree to a joint MPA proposal set proceedings back significantly. Read more...
CCAMLR’s inability to reach a decision and to roll MPA discussions on to Bremerhaven in July 2013 was disappointing but hasn’t dampened our spirits. It gives us more time to spread the word to both public and political parties, so come July our support and voice will be bigger, better and stronger. Read more...

Documentary on the cusp of an international release
Exciting times lie ahead for The Last Ocean documentary. We have signed with Denmark sales agent LevelK who will be organising the international release and distribution of the film.
We are in the process of submitting to film festivals around the world and have already had a good response. International festivals will be followed by theatrical release, broadcast and a worldwide VOD release (Video on Demand).
Our aim is to get the film seen by as many people as possible and in particular reaching audiences in key CCAMLR nations. We are working on translations and subtitling at the moment. It’s time we turned some international heat on New Zealand’s attitude to fishing in the Ross Sea.
Antarctic champion shares his thoughts
Dave Ainley, the Antarctic ecologist responsible for starting the Last Ocean movement tells us why he is still battling for protection of the Ross Sea.
As a youth, my eyes went wide and mind trembled with excitement, each time I read early naturalists’ accounts of the legendary seabirds of the enriched Benguela, Peru and California Currents, where 100 years ago flocks would take hours to pass and literally darken the sky overhead… Read more…
Last Ocean at TEDxAuckland
In one of the most terrifying moments of his life, The Last Ocean film director, Peter Young stepped onto the stage of a sold out ASB theatre in Auckland to deliver the last talk of the day at TEDxAuckland.

This time last year
The Russian fishing vessel Sparta was punctured by ice setting off an emergency rescue co-ordinated by New Zealand Maritime Safety. Not long after the South Korean fishing vessel Jeong Woo 2 caught fire with the loss of lives and some serious injuries. We never found out what happened to that vessel – it probably lies somewhere on the bottom of the Ross Sea. Take a moment and check out the madness of this fishery which equates to the madness of the global economy that drives these companies down into these dangerous and otherwise untouched waters.
Producer of The Last Ocean film receives an award
Peter Young was awarded the SPADA 2012 Independent Producer of the Year award at their annual conference in Wellington, New Zealand this November.
The award recognised Peter’s contribution to television production in New Zealand, and also acknowledged the completion and successful release of his debut feature film The Last Ocean.
